Emotional regulation is the ability to respond effectively and appropriately to emotional situations. It involves recognising emotions, and their triggers, and choosing how to handle them. Proper emotional regulation helps manage stress and prevents inappropriate reactions.
Why is stress detrimental to you?
Stress has numerous negative effects, both mentally and physically. Mentally, it can cause dread, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Physically, it can lead to panic attacks, chest pains, dizziness, insomnia, abnormal bowel movements, skin irritability, and weight changes. High levels of stress can overwhelm individuals and impair their ability to cope.
What are some tips to manage stress?
1. Constructive mindset
- Acknowledge and accept your emotions
- Practise self-affirmation and self-validation
- Use a journal to write down thoughts and feelings
- Complement positive self-talk with actionable steps toward resolution
2. Use support networks
- Reach out to friends, family, and mentors for support and advice
- Build a strong support network to gain comfort and perspective during challenging times
3. Care for your physical self
- Make self-care a non-negotiable
- Engage in regular exercise, maintain a balanced diet, and ensure adequate sleep
- Start small with physical activity, such as a walk, to clear your mind
4. Manage your time
- Prioritise tasks based on their importance and deadlines
- Use project management tools and a to-do list to stay organised
- Set achievable goals and break them into smaller tasks to feel less overwhelmed
5. Practise gratitude
