  • Identify the steps of the CLEAR framework

  • Apply the CLEAR framework to resolve conflicts

Overview:

When Pixar faced harsh criticism for Toy Story, they turned conflict into creativity, leading to a groundbreaking success. Conflict isn’t the enemy; it’s a goldmine for innovation if tackled right. That’s where the CLEAR framework shines: Consent and Context to kick off honest chats, Lead with Data to stick to facts, Explore to really get where others are coming from, Agreement to find common ground, and Resolution to nail down a plan. Embracing conflict with the CLEAR approach transforms friction into a catalyst for stronger, more dynamic teamwork, even when challenges arise unexpectedly.

Summary
What are the benefits of conflict in teamwork?

Conflict in relationships is something many of us fear, but it can be a positive force in our relationships. Creativity and good decision-making are often born from tension. Conflict usually results from clashing perspectives, and it’s those different perspectives that allow for the development of something new.

When we view conflict as a doorway to greater connection, clarity, and teamwork, we shift our internal messages from "This should not be happening” and “Who is to blame?” to “What is happening here?” and “What growth, connection, or clarity can come out of handling this with skill?”

What is the CLEAR framework?

The CLEAR framework is a tool designed to help transform conflict into a positive force for connection and teamwork. It consists of:

  • C - Consent and Context: Set up the conversation well by sharing your WHY, WHAT, and HOW, and get consent to ensure it’s a good time to talk
  • L - Lead with Data: Share objective facts first, then describe the impact and how you feel using "I" statements
  • E - Explore: Understand the other person’s perspective by asking questions and listening more than you speak
  • A - Agreement: Focus on building connection and finding areas of overlap, even if you don't agree on everything
  • R - Resolution: Ensure there’s a clear plan of action to prevent future misunderstandings and show appreciation for the effort made

How can you apply the CLEAR framework to resolve conflicts?

Applying the CLEAR framework involves several steps. Start by setting up the conversation properly with consent and context. For example, if you have concerns about a project deadline, share your reasons and what you hope to achieve from the conversation, and ensure it's a good time to talk.

Lead with data by sharing objective observations before discussing the impact and your feelings. For instance, if a team member is frequently late, mention the specific instances and how it affects you, using "I" statements to keep the conversation non-accusatory.

Explore the other person’s perspective by asking questions and truly listening to their responses. This helps uncover underlying issues and promotes mutual understanding.

Reach an agreement by finding common ground and collaborating on solutions. For example, if a colleague struggles with early meetings, you might adjust the meeting time or find other ways to accommodate their needs.

Finally, resolve the conflict by creating a clear plan of action and expressing appreciation for the effort to find a solution. This reinforces a positive, collaborative work environment.
